چکیده

J , H , K, and L photometry for the stars in the central ∼ 2 (∼ 5 pc) of the Galaxy are presented. Using the observed J − H , H −K, and K − L colors and assumed intrinsic colors, we determine the interstellar extinction at 2.2 μm (AK) for approximately 1100 individual stars. The mean AK (= 3.3 mag) is similar to previous results, but we find that the reddening is highly variable and some stars are likely to be seen through AK > 6 mag. The de–reddened K−band luminosity function points to a significantly brighter component to the stellar population (> 1.5 mag at K) than found in the stellar population in Baade’s window, confirming previous work done at lower spatial resolution. The observed flux of all Galactic center stars with estimated K◦ (de–reddened magnitude) ≤ 7.0 mag is ∼ 25 % of the total in the 2 × 2 field. Our observations confirm the recent finding that several bright M stars in the Galactic center are variable. Our photometry also establishes the near–infrared variability of the M1–2 supergiant, IRS 7. Luminosity Function of the Perigalactocentric Region

We present H and K photometry of ∼ 42, 000 stars in an area of ∼ 250 arcmin centered on the Galactic center. We use the photometry to construct a dereddened K band luminosity function (LF) for this region, excluding the excessively crowded inner 2 of the Galaxy. This LF is intermediate between the LF of Baade’s window and the LF of inner 2 of the Galactic center. We speculate that the bright st...

K-Band Calibration of the Red Clump Luminosity

The average near-infrared (K-band) luminosity of 238 Hipparcos red clump giants is derived and then used to measure the distance to the Galactic center. These Hipparcos red clump giants have been previously employed as I-band standard candles. The advantage of the K-band is a decreased sensitivity to reddening, and perhaps also a reduced systematic dependence on metallicity. In order to investi...

Photometry of the Arches Cluster near the Galactic Center

We present Near-IR photometry of the Arches cluster, a young and massive stellar cluster near the Galactic center. We have analyzed the high resolution (FWHM ∼ 0.2) H and K ′ band images in the Galactic Center Demonstration Science Data Set, which were obtained with the Gemini/Hokupa’s adaptive optics (AO) system. We present the color-magnitude diagram, the luminosity function and the initial m...

Dusty Sources at the Galactic Center: The N- and Q-band view with VISIR

We present mid-infrared N and Q-band photometry of the Galactic Center from images obtained with the mid-infrared camera VISIR at the ESO VLT in May 2004. The high resolution and sensitivity possible with VISIR enables us to investigate a total of over 60 point-like sources, an unprecedented number for the Galactic Center at these wavelengths. Combining these data with previous results at short...

The Nature of the Variable Galactic Center Source GCIRS 16SW Revisited: A Massive Eclipsing Binary

We present a re-analysis of our Hand K-band photometry and light-curves for GCIRS 16SW, a regular periodic source near the Galactic center. These data include those presented by DePoy et al. (2004); we correct a sign error in their reduction, finding GCIRS 16SW to be an eclipsing binary with no color variations. We find the system to be an equal mass overcontact binary (both stars overfilling t...
